Mary Jane Veloso, a death row convict in a drug smuggling case, has been deported to her home country, the Philippines. The Indonesian government has ensured that Veloso remains a convicted criminal and will be placed in a prison in the Philippines. The handover took place at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Cengkareng, Tangerang, on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.
According to I Nyoman Gede Surya Mataram, the Acting Deputy Coordinator of Immigration and Corrections at the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Veloso will undergo the remaining sentence in a Philippine prison. He clarified that she would not be immediately released upon her arrival and would have to go through the legal process in the Philippines.
Surya stated, “This is a transfer of a convict, she will still be placed in a jail in the Philippines. She won’t be celebrating Christmas at home; she will undergo the legal process in her country.” The specifics of Veloso’s legal proceedings in the Philippines will be determined by the Filipino government, as explained by Surya.
